WHY NOT GROW YOUR OWN?

By planting a shady corner of your garden with Hazel you can grow your own beanpoles at the same time as providing important wildlife habitat.

Very little space is needed as ideally the plants should only be a metre apart;

Each plant will produce at least 10 bean poles and peasticks every five years;

Hazel produces tasty nuts and its `Iambs tails' catkins are amongst the first things to bring colour to the garden after winter.

There is no better indicator of how remote we have become from our environment than the widespread use of twigs, in the form of bamboo, from China to support runner beans. If we can not supply our own twigs without going half way around the world, it is difficult to see us combating some of the bigger environmental challenges facing us today.

JOBS FOR LOCAL PEOPLE

Local woods can provide most of the products that are currently imported from places where forests and forest peoples are threatened. By using home‑grown wood products we can create new jobs, protect British woodland wildlife, at the same time as reducing damage to the rainforest.

PARTNERSHIPS FOR CHANGE

The Local Woodland Products Initiative is a partnership of Ipswich Wildlife Group, Ipswich Organic Gardening Club, Gipping Valley and Woodbridge Local Exchange Trading Schemes (LETS).

ACTION FOR CHANGE

We are working to encourage the use of sustainable woodland products in the garden. We also organise the supply of traditional beanpoles and peasticks so that at the very least we can leave the bamboo in China for the Pandas!
